A team from the new ISP in Kuwait WIMD came over to my house to fix their service so I could try it and give back my feedback.

As mentioned in my previous post WIMD established a wireless network covering all Kuwait to transfer the data, unlike traditional DSL that uses landlines. Some people questioned if they have a license to operate as ISP but from what I understood from them is that they have frequency 5.4 to 5.8 GHz & 2.4 to 2.8 GHz reserved for them from Ministry of Comm. to use.

They drive their Internet bandwidth from KEMS, QualityNet, GulfNet, and soon from Fasttelco which according to them will help keep the service up at all times. Their team went up to the roof of my house and started to locate the nearest Base Station, I live in Qadisiya so they said Hawally Central was the best, then they fixed the antenna (Signal receiver) and made testing and wiring from the antenna to the wireless Cisco router in my room.

I must say their team was fully equipped and experienced, they provided me with 20 Mbps which is their highest bandwidth speed.

After we had the wireless router fixed and turned-on we set the connection and did speed and ping tests, I used their servers along with other servers for the testing; download gave 16-18 Mbps and upload gave 14-16 Mbps while ping test gave 12 ms on average.

The first thing came to my mind is try HD YouTube videos and huge Torrent files, I was excited how 1080p videos ran smoothly but I noticed on torrent that am getting about 600 Kbps download speed but I should get 2.2 Mbps, they explained that this is because they are many signal interference in Hawally due to some people using their frequencies illegally, they also have this issue in Subhan area.

They have no cap or download limit and provide 24/7 trouble-shooting. My experience was positive but we wish if they resolve the signal interference issue to get the full potential.

We wish to thank WIMD for giving us the chance to review their service.

Do you think we have enough ISP’s in Kuwait? Currently we have Kems, GulfNet, Fasttelco, QualityNet, mada, and now there’s a new company called WIMD that has just joined the market.

I had the chance to talk with their representative who explained to me their concept; basically they have established a wireless network covering all Kuwait to transfer the data, unlike traditional DSL that uses landlines.

They also said users will get dedicated bandwidth so that bandwidth speed is maintained at all times, they are targeting high speed Internet market.

Above table shows their prices per year and they admit that their prices are higher than the current market prices but when quality is concerned they are the best. Hopefully I’ll be able to test them soon so I could give you my detailed feedback.

Tomorrow will mark the first day for Kuwait’s most popular electronics/telecom expo, InfoConnect, at Kuwait International Fair and extends for a week.

I always enjoyed visiting InfoConnect expo where people could find really great deals, but I’ve noticed in the recent years that its not like before, we want to see the latest things technology has reached plus more variety and more companies.

When: January 29th till February 4th
Where: Kuwait International Fair – Mishref.
Time: 9:00am – 1pm, 4:30pm – 9pm

I know that 99% of us already have some sort of Internet access, but its great to see that more and more places in Kuwait are offering free WiFi access.

It’s a shame how some places still charge for WiFi access, I believe all malls, classy cafe’s and restaurants, hotels, government buildings and ministries should provide free internet access, come on its 2012!

Note: These are some spots that offers free WiFi, if you know more be my guest.

Today we want to take you on a tour for GITEX 2011 electronics expo in Dubai, our blog friend Eng. Mohammed brought us many cool photos and information !

GITEX remains to be my favorite electronics expo in Middle East, why ? Because it brings the latest technologies in one place, plus the big number of participating companies. Sadly Kuwait Info Connect expo doesn’t bring us much.

Here we have the world’s largest Full HD 3D 152″ screen from Panasonic.

Check this one, a weather proof TV from Panasonic, it can resist water and dust, nice.

This one is a nice 65 inch wall mount multi-touch screen for many purposes.

I liked their E-Government project, they have applications for every device (iPhone, iPad, Androids, BlackBerry, Galaxy Tab..etc) so citizens can easily pay or access any service.

This one is the world’s most intelligent riding robot for kids with sensors, voice alert, and turn radius, nice!

Here we have innovative water proof speakers.

This one is wireless camera bag from a Korean company.

In here, we have a small home robot that can do many house works.

Even Dubai police are now fixing wireless cameras on the dogs so they can record everything.

Apple was also part of expo with many products.

School books in Dubai are on iPads, I think Kuwait is also planning to use iPads and CD’s instead of paper ones.

Another multi-touch screen used as a table for many purposes from Panasonic.

I like the E-Gate idea, they can be used for airports for faster immigration and this eliminates the need to wait in long queues for an immigration officer to stamp and verify individual passports.

This is an amazing dust and weather proof laptop computers.

There’s a lot more to see at GITEX, now we’ll leave you with some photos that we have taken, and hope you enjoyed the short tour. :)

Thanks [Eng. Mohammed]

While browsing my photos album, I found these nice sunset photos that I took during my flight to Manchester City so I can use them as screen wallpaper, the plane was at 39,000 feet (11,700m) high and you can see the tiny clouds. Below are the full sized photos if you like to use them. :)

Note: Adjust lighting and colors if you wish.

I just received news that Steve Jobs had resigned from CEO of Apple and he has “strongly” recommended Tim Cook be named as CEO of Apple and REUTERS have reported that Apple shares dropped by 7%.

No one is sure about the reason of this sudden decision, maybe its the sickness? Though the important question is; Will Apple ever be the same without Steve Jobs?

My friend bought the new limited edition of Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 from Zain so I had the chance to get my hands on it for a quick review.

It has 10.1 (800 x 1280 pixels) inch display, nice for movies and Internet browsing  plus its very slim and light in weight. Specs include 1GHz Tegra 2 processor, 8 MP front camera- and rear-facing camera, 16GB/32GB internal memory and Android 3.1 honeycomb OS.

It can play Flash, Divx, MPEG4 with no problems, I noticed the Android 3.1 OS is fast and more friendly.  In my opinion, its better than iPad !

I still love the old classic games from the early 90′s, remember SEGA, Nintendo, Amiga, DOS games ? Today I found that I still have a few classic from the early 90′s and I wanted to play them badly.

Of course this is impossible on Windows 7, but I found a small program that will let you enjoy your favorite games on any Windows or even Mac OS ! This time I explain to you how to play old PC games, next time I will talk about SEGA and Nintendo emulators.
